Revealing the floor in the tower

While cleaning the rubble and debris from the tower on 7th Sept came a star find. As we started clearing the last of the loose soil from the West side of the tower we found at the same height as the packed earth surface, the corner of a stone slab, and then a few feet later what looked like a brick floor.

A little cleaning with water showed the slab was a golden colour of what looks like a sandstone. The bricks turned out to be pavers, 40mm deep made of a yellow material flecked with red very similar to the ‘London Stock’ type of brick made from ‘brickearth’ clay which has a deposit in Stoney Hills Ware.

We have been told it is more likely this is a later floor surface not original to the tower and not at its original level, but whatever it’s age it is a beautiful feature we look forward one day to cleaning and presenting at its best.

Once again, thank you to everyone who helped with the rubble removal and processing event last month – this find would not have been possible without your efforts!
